9 simple tips from vocal professionals to prevent sore throat after singing!
Tip #1 : Make sure your microphone is loud enough that you can hear your own voice when singing
Most amateur singers get sore throat because they try too hard to be heard when singing over loud music, and that causes too much constriction and strain, leading to sore throat the next day. This is a simple tip, but an important one to get right.
Tip #2: Do not shout into the microphone when singing
Many people think that singing loud = shouting into the microphone. There are many other ways to sing loud, and shouting is not recommended. Shouting leads to greater throat abuse, leading to a greater risk of experiencing sore throat the next day. Also, your friends won’t appreciate being shouted at, and you may not have any friends left after the karaoke session.
Tip #3: Adjust the key of the song if it is too high or too low for your vocal range
Yes, we do agree that you will get a huge rush of adrenalin when you are able to sing a very challenging song in its original key. But, if you have to scream like a dying chicken just to be able to hit those super high notes, it is still better to lower the key slightly to save your voice from vocal abuse. And save your friends from permanent ear trauma. If you still want to have friends.
Tip #4: Do not push too much breath when singing high notes in a song
A lot of amateur singers also think that singing high means that we have to take in a huge breath, and push all that breath out in order to be able to reach the high note in a song. On the contrary, most high notes require less breath push, but more support from the body and other supporting muscles. After all, you’re not giving birth to a baby in the karaoke room, so there’s no need to push so hard.
Tip #5: Twang more in order to be heard better
A brighter and twangy voice is a more vocally projected voice. And this will certainly help you to be able to vocalize more efficiently, and also to be heard more clearly without you having to push harder or work your voice harder. If you don’t know what a twangy voice sounds like, just listen to a baby cry. YES. Now you know what I mean by vocal projection.
Tip #6: Slouching when singing is not going to help your voice to be heard better
Our body posture is extremely important when singing, especially for high notes and for belting. This is why, if we slouch when singing in the karaoke room, it will certainly not help in our vocal projection, and might even cause us to push more breath and get more constriction in our singing, resulting in vocal fatigue. And slouching when singing certainly won’t impress your dream date at the karaoke session.
Tip #7: Sing with a more oral placement rather than a nasalized placement
Some singers tend to nasalize their voice and keep it in their nose, resulting in a muffled and dark sound which is harder to be heard when singing. In order to save our voice and reduce the risk of sore throat, we can place our voice in a more oral placement, so that less of our sound is masked by our nasal cavity.
Tip #8: Drink sufficient water during the karaoke session. Warm honey water is great!
For those of us who have voices that are prone to sore throat, ordering warm honey water during karaoke is great for preserving our vocal health and also keeping us well hydrated during the long singing session. Alcohol is not preferred because it makes our vocal folds more dehydrated, although it does have other additional benefits like making everybody high so that you and your friends can just be silly together for one night and forget about all that happened the next day. Just make sure nobody’s taking photos of what’s happening.
Tip #9: Sing in a group so you can all sing together and not feel too stressed out when singing solo!
The most fun thing about singing karaoke is when we sing in a group, because when everyone sings together, nobody feels stressed to sing too well and everyone can just have fun when singing!
