Alvin started playing the saxophone at a late age of 12 back in 1996. 2 years later in 1998, he developed an interest for Jazz music which started from a Jazz compilation CD titled "Happy Anniversary Charlie Brown". Taking Gerry Mulligan to be his idol from that particular CD, Alvin started listening and playing more improvised music from the other Jazz greats on records, especially Phil Woods which Alvin resembles his playing style to as a model.
A year later in 1999, Alvin found himself playing at the Singapore Winds Symphony for a short stint as the youngest saxophonist then. He was already getting paid playing for gigs another year or two later, while doing busking during his free time.
After completing his National Service from 2001-2003, Alvin went on to start his freshman year at the Australian National University to study the Jazz saxophone as a performance major. In the 4 years of university, he was involved in several projects, some of which included playing with Jazz greats such as Mark Levine and Bob Mintzer. Alvin was also the first alto in the University's Big Band. He graduated in 2006 with a BMus, and in 2007 with a BMus(1st Class Hons).
Alvin has just returned to Singapore in February 2010, and is currently working as a musician and teacher."
